Drive-by Methodologies Applied to Railway Infrastructure Subsystems: A Literature Review—Part I: Bridges and Viaducts

Bridges and viaducts are critical components of railway transport infrastructures, providing safe efficient means for trains to cross over natural barriers such as rivers valleys. Ensuring the continuous operation these structures is therefore essential avoid disastrous economic consequences even human losses. Drive-by methodologies have emerged a potential cost-effective monitoring solution accurately prematurely detecting damage based on instrumented vehicles while minimizing disruptions train operations. This paper presents review drive-by applied bridges viaducts. Firstly, premises method briefly reviewed, applications discussed. In sequence, several works involving use modal characteristic extraction presented, encompassing most important developed time well recent advancements in field. Finally, problem identification discussed—both relation non-modal parameter-based techniques considering promising features current development detection machine learning algorithms. A comprehensive conclusion presented at end article, summarizing achievements perspectives future developments. By critically assessing application viaducts, this contributes advancement knowledge crucial area, emphasizing significance ensuring integrity safety vital infrastructures.
